Illiterate for a day

About a week and a half ago, Group 4 got together to try our hands at calligraphy. Here's how it turned out!

We decided to copy texts, just like illiterate scribes might have. We decided this based on our knowledge that illiterate scribes' work was often more accurate than literate scribes' because literate scribes could interpret the words, and potentially make mistakes. Illiterate scribes were often more accurate because they just copied what they saw.

Catherine and I both copied some of these words (can you find which ones?):

Tips and tricks for being an illiterate scribe:
  • Practice first
  • Use a straightedge to get your bearings
  • Try, try again
  • Outline your letters
We really appreciating trying our hands at calligraphy because we learned for ourselves the following:
  • Writing beautifully is hard!
  • Finding the right materials can be difficult
  • Writing takes time
We really felt that copying texts ourselves taught us a lot about writing!
